Parenting Seminar for Grade School Parents/Guardians

Doing It: How Much is Too Much? was conducted on September 25, 2018 at LCC Silvercrest Auditorium. It was organized by the Guidance Department to help the parents their parenting. The discussion was led by Dr. Myra Alday Bersoto, a registered guidance counselor, Psychometrician and a License Public School Teacher.
Parenting practices according to Encyclopedia of Psychology around the world share three major goals: ensuring children's health and safety, preparing children for life as productive adults and transmitting cultural values. A high-quality parent-child relationship is critical for healthy development.
The overall discussion in the seminar focused on parents tendency to over-do things in their efforts to give their children the best. As a result , they unknowingly create some negative consequences for their children. The speaker categorized today's parents as
- Over-involved in their children's lives
- Over-focusing on children's happiness
- Over-indulging by buying too much
- Over-scheduling with too many activities
- Over-pressuring kids by wanting them to succeed and standout
- Over-praising in an effort to help them have good self-esteem
- Over-stimulating by allowing excessive time on computers, videos, electronic games, and cell phones
In conclusion , the speaker emphasized that proper parenting and guidance, can help todays' children cope with different situations and circumstances of life , making things possible to give what is best for their children.
This seminar aims to develop parenting style and guidance to aviod over doing things for their children. Also, it aims to provide information on what parents really need to give their children to be successful in life. That includes time, attention, values, coping skills, acceptance of feelings, limits, responsibility and much more.
The seminar was a success. It started at exactly 1pm and ended at exactly 4:15pm. Four hundred sixty five parents attended the parenting seminar .The Guidance Department received positive feedbacks from the parents through the evaluation of the seminar.
